56th Grammy Awards: The Aftermath

Well, the 56th Annual Grammy Awards have officially wrapped up. Awards have been handed out and everyone goes on with their lives as usual. Just like everyone else, I had a mixed reaction to the overall event. Some things they got right, others they didn’t. So let me talk about the show first.

The show opened up with Beyonce performing Drunk In Love with her husband, Jay Z. It was alright. LL Cool J hosted the show again, big surprise. The first award they handed out was Best New Artist, which went to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. I knew they were gonna win. Then Lorde performed her hit single Royals while acting like she got possessed by the devil. They gave Daft Punk’s Get Lucky the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. I didn’t stick around for Katy Perry and Taylor Swift’s performances. John Legend performed All Of Me, Paul McCartney won Best Rock Song, and Pink recycled her old “hanging from the ceiling” thing for her performance. Jay Z and Justin Timberlake won Best Rap/Sung Performance for Holy Grail and Lorde won Best Pop Solo Performance for Royals, preceded by a monster performance from Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons, who did a mash-up of Radioactive and m.A.A.d city. Those two acts had one of the best performances of the night. They got the whole venue turnt up, even Taylor Swift started dancing terribly. It would’ve been a good idea to just transition to commercial after that performance so people could recover from it, but some idiot decided to have Kacey Musgraves (who’d eventually win Best Country Album) perform after. You can’t do that. If you’re gonna have that performance, then do it after commercial break. Anyways, they give the Lifetime Achievement Award to The Beatles followed by a performance from Paul and Ringo. Bruno Mars took Best Pop Vocal Album, then we get a great performance from Daft Punk, alongside Pharrell and his Arby’s hat, Nile Rogers, and Stevie Wonder, doing Get Lucky and a medley of other songs. It was perfection, another one of the best performances of the night. Lorde won Song of the Year followed by Metallica and Lang Lang performing One. Get Lucky won Record of the Year and then comes a memorable performance from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis doing Same Love while 33 different couples, gay and straight, simultaneously¬†get married. A great performance, if only Madonna didn’t fuck it up near the end. There was a tribute to all of those in the music industry who passed away and they gave out the last award of the night, Album of the Year, to Daft Punk for Random Access Memories. The show was wrapped up with a performance from Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age, Dave Grohl, and Lindsey Buckingham. Well, the performances overall were okay. There were some great ones like Kendrick and Imagine Dragons and Daft Punk while others are pretty forgettable. Aside from the performances, the shit was boring overall.

Now as for the awards that were handed out in both the pre-telecast and the actual show, it’s a mixed bag. Some of my predictions were correct and some of them weren’t. Daft Punk won every award they were nominated for while Macklemore & Ryan Lewis took home four awards. JT took home three awards, Best R&B Song for Pusher Love Girl, Best Music Video for Suit & Tie, and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for Holy Grail. Strangely, he didn’t take anything in the Pop Field. The biggest upset to me, and possibly others, is Kendrick Lamar not getting one Grammy. He got robbed for Best Rap Album. It’s not like Macklemore doesn’t deserve anything. Hell, he deserves to win something. He put out a good album and became successful without the backing of a major label, which is inspiring to any up-coming artists. But I feel like Macklemore only deserved three of the four awards he won. Best Rap Album should’ve went to Kendrick. He had the best album outta that whole line-up. Even Macklemore himself thought the same. Oh, well. I’m over it. Kendrick will get his Grammy eventually and if he doesn’t, he’ll be fine. Not every great artist wins a Grammy. Also, Taylor Swift didn’t win anything and thank goodness. People, myself included, thought she was gonna win some awards and she ends up walking home empty-handed. It’s nice to see that the Grammys aren’t just gonna kiss Taylor’s ass every year.

So, yeah. Those were the Grammys. Nothing has really changed. They did some things right, they did some things wrong. It seems like the Grammys aren’t even sure what they award. At times, it seems like they award artistic merit and other times, they just give nominations and awards to the most popular acts. It’s sort of a bipolar thing. They’ll have to make up their minds, eventually, or maybe that won’t happen and this confusing shit keeps happening. It’ll be interesting to see what gets nominated for the 57th Grammy Awards. I have a few guesses, but it’s too early to call it. We’ll see what 2014 has to offer for music.
